36 / Are you part of a huge global majority?
This week's MIMIT confronts the 'Simple Truth' about climate change. As temperatures soar and summers break records year after year, this poem captures our collective anxiety about the planet's future and the urgent need for decisive action from world leaders.
This Mimit sprang out of my fingers in 2023. According to NASA scientists, 'The hottest ever summer.' But again in 2024, 'The hottest ever summer.' Mopping my brow, and preparing to start on my third litre of water, I see we're at 35C this afternoon. Will this be once more, 'The hottest ever summer?' Will the seemingly apparent casual approach shown by so many global leaders get us to net zero by 2050?
According to the United Nations, No! It would seem that, 'Commitments made by governments to date fall far short of what is required.' But our climate affects every aspect of our health, what we eat, what we wear and does so, regularly every single day! How come our leaders haven't placed this at the very top of their agendas with single minded determination? Reasons? How about fearing loss of political power, combined with greed?
Could say more, but won't rant!
However, the world, it appears, is on the alert. I quote:

The collaboration builds on a slate of recent scientific studies finding that between 80-89% of the world’s population want stronger climate action. This overwhelming global majority, however, does not realize that they are a majority; most think their fellow citizens don’t agree. Experts agree breaking this “spiral of silence” could be pivotal to spurring critical climate action
So if you're ever feeling you're the only one concerned, take heart! We're a whopping majority. Don't majorities run the show? Let's all keep sending strong clear messages to our leaders. Action is required NOW! It's already long overdue.
