#23 - How Many Ways Can You Cheer Yourself Up?
In a world fixated on gloom, this MIMIT celebrates the power of joyful expression. Dancing, singing and laughter aren't frivolous - they're essential for wellbeing. Joy doesn't diminish our compassion for suffering; rather it strengthens us to face difficult realities with hope and renewed purpose.

It's a strange world at the moment. More and more of us are reluctant to hear the morning news. The current tendency right now is towards gloom, doom, woe and misery.
In a non-stop, relentless fashion.
This isn't life-affirming for any of us. Singing, dancing, music, art and nature in every form are what's good for us. More cheering conversation on radio and television. More wise and uplifting words in our newspapers. Not forgetting it's absolutely necessary to have a laugh whenever possible. At the absurdity of human nature, and at the very least, a smile at the sheer silliness of some phrases.
At the risk of NOT making you laugh, or even smile, for whatever reason I always seem to recall these! Can't give you any links!
- A man walks into a cafe and says 'Get me a crocodile sandwich, and make it snappy!'
- Garfield gazing at aliens who've just landed, saying, 'We're from the Planet Greet' and Garfield replies, 'Ahh, Greetings!'
- Garfield again, 'Show me a good mouser, and I'll show you a cat with bad breath.'
However, none of this means a mean brutal insensitivity towards the millions who're suffering enormous hardship, every single day of their lives. You all know the ones I'm talking about, I'm quite sure. We need to do everything we can, through whatever means possible to us, to help them. Many, courageous, dedicated and caring men and women are actively doing this every day - on behalf of all humanity.
That said, we do no favours to aid workers or sufferers by maintaining gloom and depression. If we're unable to give practical help we're still - and always - capable of sending love and light.
That's not a cop-out. One day we'll all know just how much the energy of our thoughts has the power for good. Go for it!
